FAQs
Yes, the Adopt section of the website shows the current animals available for adoption and is continuously updated.
We do take adoptable surrended animals if space is available at the shelter. An appointment must be arranged for a mandatory medical and behavioural assessment to be completed. There is a fee to surrender an animal to HSGN depending on the type of animal and its history. Please be advised that you may be placed on a waiting list if space is not available when you contact us.
Adoption fees vary depending on the type and age of the animal.
Note: an administration fee of $5 or 5% (whichever is greater) will apply to all adoption fees upon checkout.
- Adult Cat – $125
- Kitten (6 months or younger) – $175
- Adult Dog (greater than 25 lbs) – $500
- Puppy (less than 1 year) – $600
- Small Adult Dog (25 lbs or under) – $600
- Bunny – $40
- Guinea Pig – $25
- Budgie – $15
- Fancy Rat – $20

If you are adopting a dog, it is a requirement that you purchase a license for the municipality in which you reside prior to pick-up.
Licenses for St. Catharines and Thorold are available online at docupet.com and licenses for Grimsby are sold at our shelter. Prices vary.
These fees help to partially cover the cost of caring for your new pet’s stay at our shelter. The adoption fee includes:
- All cats, kittens, dogs, puppies and rabbits will be spayed/neutered
- At least one set of vaccinations for dogs, puppies, cats and kittens
- All cats and dogs will have a 24PetWatch Microchip to help your pet return home should they become lost
- All dogs will have completed a behaviour assessment
- Any medical treatments or surgeries that were required while in HSGN’s care
Plus, your new best friend = priceless!
You will need:
- To provide a piece of photo identification with a current address, (a utility or lease agreement if you have recently moved)
- Consent from all adults living in the home via email or text
- A clear understanding who will be the primary care giver
- Dogs must leave the HSGN with a collar & leash (provided by the adopter)
- Cats, birds & small animals must leave in a carrier (provided by the adopter)
All healthy, adoptable animals are kept at the shelter for as long as it takes to find them new homes. For some animals, this can mean living at HSGN for six weeks or longer until the right home becomes available. No animal is ever euthanized due to lack of space or because they have been here too long.
